Imagine transforming a blank wall into a lush, living masterpiece. That’s the magic of living walls! These vertical gardens use pockets, pouches, or planting grids attached to walls. They’re perfect for both indoor and outdoor spaces. Living walls are a great way to add a touch of nature to urban environments and create a stunning visual impact.
**Tower Gardens**
Tower gardens are like green skyscrapers for your plants! These vertical structures use stacked containers or shelves to grow plants. They’re excellent for small spaces and can accommodate a variety of plants, from herbs to flowers. Tower gardens are ideal for those who want a compact, visually appealing garden.
I used the Mr. Stacky tower seen in the image to create a “Salsa Garden”. In four of the tiers, I planted my favorite salsa ingredients, tomatoes, peppers, onions and cilantro and in the fifth tier I planted lettuce.
**Green Screens**
Green screens are fantastic for adding privacy and greenery to your outdoor space. They consist of a trellis or framework that supports climbing plants. These can create beautiful natural barriers, like flowering vines that bloom throughout the season.
**Pocket Planters**
If you’re looking for a simple and budget-friendly way to start vertical gardening, pocket planters are your best friend. These are typically fabric pockets that can be hung on walls or fences. They’re perfect for herbs, succulents, or small vegetables.
**Pallet Gardens**
Upcycling lovers, this one’s for you! Pallet gardens use repurposed wooden pallets as the framework for your vertical garden.
One of the advantages of pallet gardens is their versatility. You can customize the planting areas to suit different types of plants, from herbs and succulents to flowers and even small vegetables. This makes them perfect for balconies, patios, or any area with limited horizontal space.
Note: When using pallets for planting edible crops, it’s essential to select pallets that are safe for food contact. In a later post we’ll get into what to look for and what to avoid.
